Barrett Spraggins understands the critical importance of an effective intellectual property strategy in today’s competitive business environment. He helps clients develop IP strategies that not only protect their technological innovations but also drive their business success.

For over fifteen years, Barrett has represented clients in a wide range of IP matters with a focus on creating and managing global patent portfolios for defense, monetization, and litigation.  He also has extensive experience performing IP evaluations, advising on patent landscapes and freedom to operate, and assisting with technology transactions, patent licensing, and litigation support. With a background in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University, Barrett works across various industries and technologies, including: Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), model training and usage, cloud computing, software applications, electrical power and battery systems, autonomous vehicles, sensor design, medical devices, circuit design and fabrication, and computer hardware.

Recognized as a top intellectual property attorney, Barrett is ranked nationally in the IAM 1000 and recognized as an IAM Strategy 300 Global Leader by Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) in their list of the World’s Leading IP Strategists. He has presented and published extensively on emerging technologies and on creating and implementing strategies for IP protection.

Barrett is also active in many professional organizations.  He currently serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Florida Intellectual Property Alliance (FLIPA) and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Intellectual Property Alliance (TXIPA).  Barrett also currently serves as Vice Chair of the Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee for the American Bar Association Section of IP Law (ABA-IPL) and Vice Chair of the AI Subcommittee for the Harmonization Committee of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA).  He is a member of AIPLA’s AI Task Force and was appointed as the U.S. representative to the Digital Economy Standing Committee for the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI).

Before co-founding Kennedy Lenart Spraggins, Barrett practiced patent law as a partner at Biggers & Ohanian in Austin, Texas.  He received a Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University and a Juris Doctor degree from Florida State University, where he was executive editor of the Florida State University Business Review and a member of the Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law.  Outside of his law practice, Barrett enjoys spending time and traveling with his wife and two children.
